What
We are so lucky in the UK to enjoy the changing of the seasons. Spring is wonderful with all of its promise of new life and warmer weather to come but, for me, it is hard to beat the splendour of Autumn. It is the perfect time to get out into nature and really experience its beauty and strangeness. Over the last few weeks I have enjoyed seeing the birds in the sky migrating to warmer climates; fabulous fungi in all of their weird and wonderful shapes and sizes; stunning webs of the Orb weaver spider made even more beautiful by the heavy dews brought on by warm days and cool nights; the beautiful shiny conkers falling to the ground in their alien looking spiky pods; and, of course, lots of lovely acorns.
Where
In your local area…
If you have young children it is the most special time to get them outside and show them how incredible nature is. The abundance found in autumn makes nature feel so tangible and immediate and, whatever your own private space, you shouldn’t have to walk far to find something worth looking at. Find some railings and hunt for spider webs, look for some conkers on the ground under a horse chestnut tree or some acorns underneath an oak, pick up some fallen leaves and make a leaf rubbing, search for insects in or under your window box or plant pot.
Why
Keep them entertained, teach them something new and get them excited and interested in nature. Win, win, win.
